Teach Your Developers SEO

They will thank you later. I've worked with hundreds of developers and development teams and I've really enjoyed getting to know them and learning their pain points when it comes to working with SEO teams.

If you are a developer you already know this, but for everyone else, they don't get taught SEO in coding class. They are taught to code, they aren't taught how to deploy optimization that allows for search engines to crawl and index a page. They aren't taught what or how to effect user experience.

As digital marketers, it's part of our job to make sure they, as part of the broader team we work with, learn and understand what specific search engine optimization tactics or activities are put in place and why.

I love teaching and talking about SEO and have done so with so many kinds of people, teams and groups. I've developed two types of SEO education or workshops for developers, most the technical side of SEO, and another track I developed for content marketers or editorial teams for the site side or content marketing component of SEO.

I'd love to share with you one of my workshop trainings I created for a team of developers in Toronto associated with a large well-known bank, The Bank of Montreal.

If you'd like to download a copy of that workshop - you can do that here

There are some developers who are a bit resistant to listening to what the SEO tells them. I get it, it's "their" domain, they may not take too kindly to being told to leverage a CDN, which will only make the page speed that much more improved.

But, one of the things I've always told them was that by learning and applying any and all SEO tactics I provide to them, and making sure that every page they build includes the standard technical SEO best practices, they can and should add that to their resume. Think about it, who wouldn't want to hire some developer who truly gets and understands SEO?

If you lead an SEO team, and work with developers, you should try to have a least a quarterly lunch and learn with the team and help them learn a bit more so they can make your job a little easier.

Let me know in the comments below if you ever tried anything like this with you developers?

And if you are a developer, I'd love to know what you think about all this?

Share this with your favorite developer today!
